skip to content menu my life…the big adventure… testimonials videos contact len len murray after dinner speaker my life…the big adventure… len murray, justice of the peace (retired), bachelor of law, solicitor to the supreme courts of scotland, knight commander of justice of the order of st. john of jerusalem knights hospitaller, was born in glasgow a long time ago, he says, certainly long before traffic wardens were ever invented. after studying modern languages, history and law at glasgow university he qualified as a solicitor. he remained in practice in glasgow until 2003 when he retired. he says he had not a bad career. he was once described by a high court judge as “the most respected of his generation” and in the media as “one of the most acclaimed scottish lawyers”. he was the first ever media spokesman for the law society of scotland; he has lectured at glasgow, strathclyde and adelaide universities, as well as at tulliallan police college. he served on the central committee of the law society of scotland for some eight years and was the committee’s vice – chairman for two. he also had spells as a temporary sheriff and as a part – time chairman of employment tribunals, medical appeal tribunals and social security appeal tribunals. he is now an ambassador for glasgow caledonian university. he was one of the better known and most experienced court lawyers of his generation and throughout his career he was associated with headline cases for household names and people like paul mccartney, billy connolly, david soul of starsky and hutch fame, tommy docherty, jock wallace and the legendary jock stein were among his clients. he is the only surviving scottish lawyer with personal experience of capital murder cases, having been the junior member of the defence team in two capital murders, one of which resulted in the death penalty being carried out. he was involved in what was effectively the only war crimes case in this country when he acted for scottish television in successfully defending a libel action brought by antanas gecas, whom scottish television had named as a war criminal . he was legal adviser news and current affairs for scottish television and the independent television network in scotland before he retired. he is now equally well known as one of the country’s top after-dinner speakers and was scottish wit of the year in 2012, 2015, and again in 2017, the only speaker to win that award three times. he is also a former winner of the prestigious wag of the year award. the testimonials which follow in this webpage speak volumes of his ability as an extremely funny, witty and accomplished speaker. len is also regarded as one of the country’s foremost speakers on robert burns and his immortal memory has been described as “legendary” and by the then president of the burns federation as the best she has ever heard. he is dean of the guild of robert burns speakers and has spoken at over 400 burns suppers right across the world on five continents from edmonton and calgary in north west canada to camperdown and melbourne in south east australia. he has twice been the keynote speaker at the annual burns festival in camperdown, victoria. he is a member of the executive committee of the burns federation and is an honorary president of greenock burns club, the oldest burns club in the world. in january 2009 the scottish parliament held its first ever burns supper with various dignitaries from all over the world attending. len was invited by the presiding officer to propose the immortal memory at that prestigious and historic event. the testimonials he has must show him to be among the best burns speakers in the country. in sporting matters he played football at glasgow university and as a schoolboy once represented scotland at tennis though he was never asked back! he confines himself now to the bowling rinks where he has been outstandingly unsuccessful. len murray © all rights reserved
